Ramadan Kareem

For any Arabic-speaking readers, Ramadan Kareem.

Yes, Ramadan begins today. A month of daily fasting and nightly feasting. Strange how that works. You can't eat or drink anything while the sun shines, but you can eat half a cow at night, once the sun goes down.

Still, for those that seriously practice Islam, it is a time of intense focus on their faith. Like Catholics during Lent. The city will be quiet for a few weeks, with the exception of my little neighborhood, Ainkawa, which is mostly Christian. And the soccer fields, which mostly don't care--the boys just want to play.

Allahu Akbar!
